Art Students were given a camera and sent out into the building scavenging the building to photograph a letter of the alphabet on a sign or some kind of print.  Students were not given any formal instructions other than to photograph their assigned letter.  The results were surprising.  After students completed the assignment, a power-point was created and formal issues of photography were then discussed; ie. composition, lighting, and flash. Art Syllabus...

Art Syllabus
Mr. Burns

Course Description:
The mission of this course is designed to provide students an introductory working knowledge of both traditional, historical and contemporary art topics and techniques of art. Students will also be presented relevant contemporary and historical artists and art styles within a wide range of assignments that will ask students to compare, analyze, evaluate and discuss their own work as well as the work of others. All assignments have been developed and created to fulfill the North Carolina Essential Standards.  http://www.ncpublicschools.org/acre/standards/new-standards/

Art Topics Covered:
-Photography, Drawing, Graphic Design, Color, Expression, Sculpture and Product Design
-An Outline of Projects and Assignments can be found on Mr. Burns’ School Fusion Web Page.  This includes an idea about what’s happening in class as well as when all homework and long-term assignments are due.  Additionally, I will be blogging occasionally on this site as well, and continuing a discussion after the school bell has rung.

Grading:
Assessment of student work and progress will be based on:
 - Evaluation of each project according to a predetermined rubric.
- Participation in class discussions, class online blog, and other activities
- Written assessments and responses to their own works and works of others.
- Students will keep a photographic portfolio of all of their work throughout the year in which the progression of ability and knowledge should be evident.
- Extra Credit opportunities are offered often and I will be happy to entertain any ideas from students who are willing to try something independently.

TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION
I am also dedicated to integrating technology into the curriculum.  High School Art is about preparing a student for his or her future, and the use of technology and being literate online is a huge part of this goal.  This means that a student must have access to a computer.  There are multiple ways a student can accomplish any computer-dependent assignment. Use a computer at home. Utilize a computer at the local public library. Use a computer at a family or friend’s house. Make an appointment to come in after school and use a classroom computer.  Ask to come in during any lunchtime.

BEHAVIOR
Since Art is a subject where interacting within your environment can play an important role in your success I do not expect silence in my class. After saying that I do expect proper classroom behavior at all times. I will warn a student once; the next offense will require an after school detention.  After the detention, and there still is a problem, I will call parents. The next and final step if the problem is still persistent, will be a referral to the principal.  A severe problem such as talking back, or fighting will result in an immediate referral to the office.

MATERIALS: Considering Budget Issues We Ask That All Students Purchase the Following Supplies.
- Spiral Sketchbook: Purchased at Wal- Mart, Family Dollar, Michael's, UBE, AC Moore
- Roll of 1” Wide Masking Tape
- Pink Eraser
- Pencils: Mechanical or Wood-You must bring a Pencil Everyday To Class
- Hand Held Pencil Sharpener
- Color Pencils- 2 packs of 8 or 12
 Flash Drive

* Supplies may be left in the classroom.  Label a container of your choice with student’s name.  This will be kept in a safe place for student access.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
If a student should miss class for any reason sickness, vacation, or anything else make up work will be provided.  However it will be a students responsibility to make the missed classwork. Class assignments can be found below by clicking the appropriate file to the date missed under class files, warm up activities are also found there. When students return from the absence they should first go through the class files to complete any work they have missed, then turn the work in and ask if there are any other assignments to complete. Lastly, parents should contact me directly to tell me dates of planned or extended absences. Thanks.

DAILY STUDENT EXPECTATIONS Doing well is no secret. Work hard. Ask questions.  Respect others.  Behave appropriately.  Be prepared to learn when coming to class.  Bring your materials.  Arrive on time.  Take care of personal necessities before coming to class.  Dress appropriately.  Keep the classroom clean.  Dispose of your own trash.
